"Structural" has been applied to distinguish this approach from typological investigations that preceded or followed, but ignored the development of the notion of structure in linguistics.
Any science, discipline, school, or trend is characterizable by its subject matter, by its aims, and by the methods that it uses to reach those aims.
The subject matter of typology in the broadest sense (i.e. including its earlier and more recent forms) is the totality of human anguages , its ai m being to revea l their identities and differences; briefly, the comparison, of human languages.
