A brief Biography of a great and world famous Iranian Scientist
This biography is the reminiscence of a tireless effort to the young researchers as a thought provoking will.
Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Hessaby, the outstanding personality of science and contemporary culture, and the founder of New Physics in Iran, was born in 1903 in Tehran of parents from the city of Tafresh.
He started his formal schooling in Beirut at the age of 7, while the family was in a poor financial position and with the hardships of being far from his native land.
From the start till the end of his higher studies, he always acquired the first grade among his fellow students. He studies the Holy Quran, Golestan and Boostan of Saadi, poems of Hafez and Manshaat of Ghaem Magham at home with his mother, Mrs Ghohar shad Hessaby.
During the first summer which coincided with the start of the first world war, he studied English on his own and was active in sports. Later he became swimming instructor and life guard.
He was perfectly acqainted with the traditional Iranian music as well as the classical Western music and played piano and violin with skill. Prof. Mahmoud Hessaby went through the higher education as the following: Bachelors degree of Arts and Sciences from the American University of Beirut at the age of
17. Civil Engineering degree in 1922 at the age of
19. Medical studies at the AmericanUniversity of Beirut. Certificate of Mathematics, Astronomy and Astrology. Certificate of Biology. Electrical Engineering Diploma from «École Supérieure de L'Éléctricite», Paris. Certificate from «Ecole Supérieure des Mines», Paris. Doctors degree in Physics from Sorbonne University, Paris 1927. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Hessaby spoke French, English, German and Arabic languages and used them in his research studies. He also knew Latin, Sanskrit, Italian, Greek, Pahlavi, Avesta, and Turkish and used them in his etymological researches.
Dr. Mahmoud Hessaby during his precious life kept important and various scientific and cultural posts:
The establishment of scientific centers such as: Highway Engineering School at the Ministry of Public Works (Ministry of Roads now), the «Teachers College», writing the University Charter and founding of Tehran University and founding the Faculty of Science and Engineering School are among his most outstanding cultural services. Having thousands of young students in 2 working generations and teaching of 7 generations of instructors are the major characteristics of this great man. Posts & Services:
Survey and drawing of the first coastal road - map between Persian Gulf ports, construction of the first road from Tehran to Shemshak, construction of the first radio - station in Iran, commissioned during the dispossession of British Petroleum Company, to be the first chairman of the board and the general manager of the National Iranian Oil company (N.I.O.C. ), minister of Education in the cabinet of Dr. Mossadegh, professor of Physics at Tehran University till the age of 90 and also the dean for several years are the manifestation of some of his other services to the country.
In the scientific field, 23 research papers, articles and books have been put to print by Prof. Hessaby, including various fields such as Modern Physics, scientific words, Persian language and other scientific subjects of discussion. This Iranian scientists theory of «Infinitly Extended Particles» is very well-known among the world scientists. The medal of the «Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur», Frances greatest scientific medal was awarded to him for this very purpose.
During years of scientific research and studies in well-known universities of the world, he exchanged views with great scientists of the world such as Prof. Albert Einstein, Schrodinger, Born. Fermi and great scholars such as Russel and Andre Gide and he was the only Iranian student of Prof. Einstein. In 1987, during the Congress of 60 years of Physics in Iran, which was held in his honor, the services rendered by him as the «Father of Physics in Iran» were deeplyappreciated. May the youngsters follow the path of this valuable scientist and eminent human being.
Prof. Mahmoud Hessaby died on 3d of September 1992, while he was being treated for heart conditions, at the University Hospital of Geneva. May his way be full of followers and his memory everlasting.
Hessaby Dictionary is the result of approximately 60 years of research work in the Farsi language. Now it is our scientist's and connoisseurs duty to do their best to conserve and expand the Farsi language.
Here, I find it appropriate to thank Miss. Leila Afshar Oroumi for her cooperation in arranging this dictionary and her pursuit in its publication. I also thank the authorities of the University of Tafresh (Amir Kabir), specially Dr. Salimi,Noorpanah,Eng.Shahabi and Ebrahimian for their great assistance in the preparation of this book for final print.
I find it appropriate to thank the efforts of «Cultural works and Luminaries Society» specially the director of the society, Eng. Dashti, for the publishing of Hessaby Dictionary.
At the end, I wish to thank my son, Mr. Iraj Hessaby, for his constant efforts and assistance in accomplishing various affairs, specially in the matters of cultural research.
