Raue Dietrich (ed.) Handbook of Ancient Nubia (vols. 1 and 2)
Walter de Gruyter, 2019. — 1118 p.
The modern history of Egypt and Sudan has radically intervened in the Nubian world several times and continues to do so to this day: After the great dam construction of the 20th century, new dam, construction and prospecting projects are also the reason for the 21st century enormous time pressure to explore large-scale Nubian terrain. As a result, a tremendous increase in knowledge was achieved in all areas of cultural history. This is supplemented by discoveries in Egyptian sites, adjacent desert areas and neighboring large areas. The 42 articles in this manual aim at the diachronic, regional and large-scale perspective. Starting with the findings of the Paleolithic, the path to the coexistence of pastoral societies and larger cultural areas in the floodplain is shown. The Bronze Age cultures range from the kingdoms of Napata and Meroe to the Christian kingdoms and the Islamic early modern period. This anthology intends to bring the interested cultural scientist up to date with the latest research and to convey the eventful history of this link between the Mediterranean region and Africa.
