The author of this book A. P. Sokolsky {1908-1972) was a strong Soviet master who first carne to prominence in the Thirties and like many of his generation had his full development hindered by the war. He won the Ukrainian Championship in 194 7 and 1948 and qualified four times for the Soviet Championship, his best result being equal 8th-10th in 1944.
He is best known however as a chess coach having trained many of the prominent players who started their careers in the Ukraine and White Russia.
He was himself trained as a teacher, and wrote a number of books on the game including one devoted entirely to the opening he gave his name to in the USSR {l b2-b4, 1 P-QN4 known as the Polish Opening in many countries).
His popular exposition on pawn play, and especially the dynamic side of this question (hence the title 'in action') is bound to be of help to all who wish to improve their play or
their understanding of the great royal game.
