A much larger number of the examples given are actually lran.slated — not in every case in full, but .so far as the particular point in ([uestion is concerned. Experienced teachers have found that a mere collection of Latin examples, however appositely chosen, is usele-ss to young students ; whereas a judicious interspersion of translation encourages them to make a more adequate use of the Dictionary, and to pay attention to the ditferent applications of words. In this way too, the Dictionary becomes a school of translation, the student living not unfi-equently supplied with equivalent English words or phrases, fitting closer both to the form and the spirit of the Latin than any that might have occurred to himself. In order to develop tins feature of the Work without seriously addin'' to its bulk, verv many of the citations have been curtailed, and others which seemed superfluoas have been omitted. The shorter the citation— provided it be intelligibly— the more readily Ls its immediate bearing apprehended.
