The requirements of the physicist as well as the mathematician have been kept in mind and such omissions as the limitations of space have demanded have, as far as possible, been confined to topics which have little bearing on the structural development of the subject as a whole. Several examples of physical significance have been included among the selected problems which are to be found at the end of each chapter.
A special feature of the book is the second chapter on the nature of force and other fundamental concepts. This preliminary discussion encourages the reader to view the subject as a unified structure rather than as a number of isolated, unrelated problems.
