It acquired a special, constitutive role for the study of all speech-dependent phenomena even more recently, in the 20th century, in close connection with the development, by analytic philosophy, of the tools for the logical analysis of linguistic expressions. In fact, its historical predecessors in the 18th and 19th centuries had very little influence, and only recently dieir significance has come to be fully appreciated.
