After graduating, he occupied positions at the University of Tel Aviv, at the University of Groningen, at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, and at INRIA in Valbonne. In 1991 he moved to Ben Gurion University in Beer-Sheva, Israel, where he joined the Department of Mathematics. There he became a tenured member in 1995, and his mathematical career took off from there; later, in December 2005, Daniel was awarded the Earl Katz family chair in algebraic system theory.
