In the spring of 1969, the author gave a series of lectures on the differential equation (A) , at the University of California, Los Angeles. Then, he started putting materials together into a "book". A part of the manuscript was written at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in the spring of 1971. A complete manuscript was finished at Mathematics Research Center, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in the academic year 1972/73, during the author's sabbatical leave from the University of Minnesota.
