I am writing this in the shade of an overhang atop the red cliffs of Colorado National Monument. Ten years ago I sat in this same spot writing the opening pages of this book, using this inspirational setting to start transforming outlines and thousands of chess positions into a readable text. Now, my Western camping trip brings me here again, and my remaining task is to say something about myself and this book.
