Currently there are some 50 DP training centres world wide and The Nautical Institute has issued on average 1,200 DP certificates per annum over the past three years, and the numbers continue to increase. Captain David Bray has devoted countless hours to the development of effective training methods which he has been generous to share with colleagues. He has participated in numerous DP training centre accreditations and contributed to the DP training Forum over many years. I would like to use this foreword to acknowledge his dedication and outstanding professional commitment.
In our discussions over the years we concluded that, with so many applications, it might be useful to provide a handbook for DPOs so that they can more easily transfer from one ship to another and have a handy reference book which can be used as a refresher, a source of good management and operational practices and a guide for organising on board training particularly for the benefit of understudies.
