Saunier R.E., Meganck R.A. Dictionary and Introduction to Global Environmental Governance
London: Earthscan, 2007. – 428 p. With globalization, a nation’s developmental/environmental problems are increasingly inter-linked with the economies and policies of other countries as well as of local communities. The book makes pleasant and informative eading, which in itself is a very useful and rewarding effort. If at all one needs to find fault in the book, it is in its confidence that opposing views will be able to understand the terms and problems of one another. This may sound strange to the social scientist for whom problems are socially constructed, perceptions are reality, and ‘normal’ (as opposed to post-normal or public interest) science does not have solutions for so-called ‘wicked’ problems. On the other hand, too much relativism may also cloud one’s perspective and a confident, eloquently argued portrayal of the global problems can help to clear ones own doubts as to how these problems are to be addressed and may help us prepare to participate more effectively in the international negotiating arena.
